How Bishop McLaughlin Fosters Gratitude and Community Engagement

How Bishop McLaughlin Fosters Gratitude and Community Engagement

Everyone looks for ways to give back to the community during the holidays. At Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School, however, community engagement happens all year long. Students learn what it means to be part of a caring school community while doing their part to serve others in need. Read on to learn more about how our school encourages students to practice gratitude and become engaged members of their communities.

Expressing Gratitude Through Worship

At Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School, we express gratitude through prayer and worship. Students are encouraged to thank God during daily prayers, as well as during Mass. The celebration of the Eucharist that students participate in at Mass emphasizes the importance of gratitude, with the word “Eucharist” meaning “to give thanks.” Through this practice, students give thanks to God for the sacrifice He made for our lives.

Teaching the Importance of Giving Back

Another way our school fosters gratitude is with a culture of giving back. With each student being required to complete at least 100 hours of community service, they quickly learn to follow the example of Christ with joy and a servant mindset. Teachers and students work together to make a difference in the community, which brings them closer together and gives the school community a familial atmosphere. For students who want to go above and beyond in serving the community, the school helps coordinate connections with partner organizations.

Involvement in Community Service Projects

Bishop McLaughlin proudly partners with several local nonprofit organizations, including United Way Pasco, the Angelus, Kiddy Up Youth Ranch, Hope Youth Ranch, and Safety Town. Through these partnerships, students and their families participate in a variety of service projects. We encourage families to take part in their child’s community service projects and foster a spirit of service beyond their time in school. When students, faculty and family come together to serve the community, we’re consistently impressed by what we can accomplish.

Celebrating and Recognizing Students for Commitment to Service

While students often feel gratitude for the organizations they volunteer with and the people they serve, the school also makes an effort to recognize their accomplishments. Each month, staff members at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School come together to vote on a student to be highlighted for their commitment to service. Even the most fulfilling work can be made that much better with recognition. Through these programs, students learn about the joy of giving back and the power they have to make a difference.

At Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School, serving the community is part of the curriculum. Students and their families have every opportunity to give back in meaningful ways. Want to see how your student can become more involved and make a difference at our school? Contact us today.
